Moore’s Law

In memory of Gordon Moore.

From Wikipedia:

Gordon Earle Moore (January 3, 1929 – March 24, 2023) was an American businessman, engineer, and the co-founder and emeritus chairman of Intel Corporation.

It was in 1965 that Gordon Moore suggested that every year there would be a doubling of the number of components per integrated circuit. In 1975 he revised his forecast to a doubling every two years; that prediction has become a reliable outcome and became known as Moore’s Law.

Just look at the left-hand scale of that graph above and ponder on the figures. From less than 10,000 in 1971 to more than 10 billion in 2021!

Incredible!

Gordon Earle Moore in 1978. He died on March 24th, 2023 aged 94 years.

What an amazing man!

    1. John, for a few years. I was the 6th Commodore dealership in the UK and formed the company in October, 1978. In March, 1979 I published a report that included a Financial Times report, February 19th, 1979, “Fast-growing desk-top market”. I sold the company in late 1988. What a ride!

  1. At the beginning of my career as an Electrical Engineer I was working with designing circuits for a Swedish military airplane (JAS Gripen), and it was quite exciting to see how IC circuits kept getting faster and the components smaller (thus more complex circuits). We got the latest and most advanced stuff to build with. Some say Moore’s law is something of a self-fulfilling prophecy because the chip makers believed they needed to keep up with Moore’s law to stay competitive. Who knows? Now though it looks like it’s slowing down.

    1. Thomas, that is interesting; you were successful, I gather, at your career. After my father died in 1956, I was 12, my mother re-married a man who was a technical writer in the electrical engineering sector. At first he coached me in building a crystal set and later on coached me into studying for my British Radio Amateur Licence and passing in February, 1962. I became G3PUK!
Yes, who knows if Moore’s law sets the trend? It certainly has the markings of a self-fulfilling prophecy; as you say!

      1. Thank you for your sorrow, Thomas. There is no doubt that had my father lived to, say, 70, I would have been a very different individual. Frederick Handover was born in 1901. Yet the sudden and unexpected change in my circumstances, and my younger sister, Elizabeth, resulted in me having a very interesting and happy life.
