Ella Fitzgerald

What a fabulous person!

We came across this tribute to Ella the other day and I wanted to include a YouTube link (above).

She was born in 1917 and died in June, 1996.

Here is a summary of her life, courtesy of a Google search.

Ella Jane Fitzgerald was an American jazz singer, composer, and songwriter who is often called the “First Lady of Song”. Known for her rhythmic sense, intonation, and scat singing, Fitzgerald was the first African-American woman to win a Grammy and the first woman to win multiple Grammys. She won 13 Grammys in total and sold more than 40 million albums. Fitzgerald’s career was marked by her determination to break down societal barriers.

      1. I haven’t since our move. Though I have Spotify so I can if I want to. We left a big house with a lot of storage for a small house with virtually none. My bad we’re getting things organized more and more. But the music will probably be one of the last things. There was just too much to do, both inside and out. You’ve heard Sarah Vaughan, no?

      2. Of course; I love Sarah Vaughan.
        We have a large house here in Oregon but the plot, our land, all thirteen acres, is beautiful, and the local people are so friendly, plus the deer, that we could not envisage moving to a smaller property.

      3. You are lucky to find such a home, Paul. We’ve lived on acreage in Maine (65) and New Mexico (14). I do miss the quiet of the woods, and the wildlife. But Hawaii is home to us as much as anywhere, and the ocean is beyond beautiful. We also don’t have the problems of the US mainland right now -it’s a bit of Paradise yet still technically in the US. But who knows. Everything is changing so fast.

      4. Yes, we were very lucky. Forgive me if I have told you this before; I met Jean, and her 23 dogs, in Mexico in 2007 and quickly found out that she and I were born 26 miles apart in North London. I went out to Mexico to live with Jean in 2008 with my GSD, Pharaoh. We came north to Payson, AZ, in 2010, with 16 dogs and 7 cats, and were married. We had a reasonable well for our water but some peoples’ wells were going dry. One night, I had a nightmare that we had run out of water. We wanted to move. I spoke to some Payson friends and they said go to Oregon to be sure of water. So we did in 2012. We found this house and loved it. The previous owner had lost it to the bank. It had been empty for at least 5 years. The bank wanted $350,000 and we did the deal for $275,000.
        You are so right about everything changing so fast. I’m afraid to sleep in late! 😉

      5. Oh wow I didn’t know about the Arizona piece. I did have more of a grasp of your history with Jean. You got a deal on that property for sure. The little plantation house we bought in Hawaii with 1/3 kids acre lot? Yeah this we could’ve bought for 275 pre-Covid. After Covid it was 530 and we could not get it down lower. And we’ve done a ton of work to it because Chris is a builder and I’m a designer by my 2nd college degree.

        Similar houses on this street were going up to 850 when we moved back two years ago, if you can believe it. These are just old plantation houses! But they have a charm that some people can’t resist including us. So we always know we’re going to have some renovation in store. But just to show you the difference in places and values of property. 😳

      6. Likewise, I believe I knew that your hubbie was a builder and you were a designer. But not the scale and prices of your property. Wish we could meet up because my instinct is that we could all be good friends. Do you ever come back to mainland America?

      7. Travel is iffy these days. It just doesn’t feel like I’m compelled to go anywhere. But I do visit my friend in Washington now and again. Probably won’t be this year though.

        I know, it would be fun to get together sometime. There is a reasonable B&B in our town, with a sweet ocean view. And a very sweet lady who owns and runs it. Though she’s 80 something now and I’m not sure how long she’s going to continue. So if you ever are seriously considering the big island, do let me know. Lots to see her, though like everywhere, prices have skyrocketed. 🙏🌏🌳🐾

      8. Travel is very ‘iffy’ for us as well, as I no longer have a driving license. I had two seizures more than six months ago and the DVLA cancelled my permit. But who knows what the future will bring. You would be most welcome at our place in Merlin, Oregon. And we could explore what arrangements we could make regarding travelling to Hawaii. (Just done that: It’s not easy but it is not impossible.)
