Shining a light on these times.

There’s many a slip ‘twixt the cup and the lip.

That sub-heading is a very old proverb supporting the idea  “that even when the outcome of an event seems certain, things can still go wrong.”

That proverb came to me when I was reading a TomDispatch essay that was published last Tuesday. I couldn’t make up my mind about whether or not to continue with yesterday’s mood of “Living in interesting times” but in the end decided to so do. Because Peter Van Buren’s essay, published as a Tomgram, needs to be widely read so that as many as possible appreciate the need to reach out to those that should be supported.

I am very grateful to Tom Engelhardt for his continuing permission for me to republish his TomDispatch essays.

  1. The income gap is a frightening thing. Coupled to automation (drone delivery services, for example, will put untold numbers of under skilled people, drivers and couriers, permanently out of work) and it’s hard to see how this drift will end well.

    Great post, Paul. Essential reading.

    1. I agree that it is difficult to see a pleasant end to this era. I’m sure that history is full of examples of terrible boundaries between eras. John, thanks for your endorsement of today’s post.

      1. Our unrestricted growth policies will only be maintainable if we get off this rock and into space in a permanent and meaningful way. That is where my hope lies.

      2. @John Zande: When I were a lad, I used to fear that humanity could only save itself by getting off this planet into the wider universe — and do so before it destroyed itself.

Now I’m older, I fear exactly the same eventuality: because if humanity does reach the stars, those who will do so will be ‘the 1%’, an elite that has learnt that the way to succeed is to treat all natural resources, all life forms and the rest of humanity as expendable gambling chips.

On the article: too many words; I only read partway. I offer you instead a video that highlights the real problem: serious lack of understanding of the problem, in the gut, by the majority.

  2. Having been on the factory floor so to speak and have to earn a wage via piece work..I fully comprehend this post Paul… We are only just setting a decent ‘Living wage’ here in the UK of £7-20p an hour to start in April of this year..
Many places are still paying well below that.. And worse still is the Zero hour contracts that have people on a string..
Thank you for sharing Paul.. and nice to be back in Blog land again.. 🙂

    1. Sue, fabulous to have you back here again as well. It seems to me that whatever Government sets in place with regard to fairness in society there are too many loopholes left. Uncomfortable times!
