Picture parade twenty.

December is here!

Last Sunday I published a set of pictures from Dan Gomez showing a wonderful collection of clever things you can do with snow.  The post closed with a weather warning that Oregon was set to experience some wintery weather before the week was out.

Thus a small collection of photographs taken on our property last Friday afternoon offering proof that the snows did arrive.

Finally, the picture above represents a delightful way to find your Christmas Tree, or Noble Fir in tree speak!  We discovered that if one goes to the local office of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) you can purchase a $5 permit allowing one to go into the forests and cut your own Christmas Tree.  The red permit can be seen in the above photograph attached near the top of the tree.  So last Thursday we took our Jeep filled to the brim with blankets, spades and tow chains and other paraphernalia to allow us to safely drive some miles into the forest and 2 hours later had our tree.

Wherever you are in the world, you stay warm and dry this Winter.

  1. Some people are having all the fun… What did you say the altitude was already? In any case, the fact that, in a huge part of the USA, one can just go out cut one’s hefty fir tree, for a modest fee, is illustrative of the difference between Europe (small, crowded) and the USA (quasi infinite, sparsely populated).

  2. Thanks everyone for the comments. The reason I have been so slow in replying is that last night the temperature dropped to 10 deg F (-12 deg C) and the pipework above our well froze. Taken me all day with the help of neighbour Bill to thaw out some of the pipes; but not all. Thaw coming on Thursday!

  3. Loved the snow pictures…reminding me of my roots in Minnesota! They are beautiful, and I am grateful! Sorry to hear of your pipe freeze…that is not wonderful, but life is a mix of good and bad, is it not…Hugs, and hot chocolate or tea to you and the missus! mag

    1. Thanks MaryAnne. Yes, Jean and I have reverted to a ‘bucket and chuck-it’ lifestyle for the rest of this week. Hoping that Thursday/Friday will see the temperatures up to a level where we can see how many burst pipes we had!
