  1. Thanks for the photos Paul. Despite your bad weather, it’s interesting for me…on the opposite coast in Vermont… To learn a bit about your weather! I am growing tired of the Long Vermont winters as I get older, and I have been looking for a place with moderate climate to move to literally for years. (If I ever get brave enough to try something radically different!)

The most moderate place that I can afford that I have found so far is Eureka California. Far north on the California coast, not very far from Oregon. It rarely goes below 50°, and rarely goes above 75°. This is because it is right on the ocean of course. I have a friend Who traveled through there, and he said they get a lot of fog almost every day. Usually it does not clear until late morning. But I think I could live with that after living with so much cold weather and snow and ice.

    Take Care – Paul

    1. Paul, I think house prices have peaked (although I have no specialist interest in houses). We live in a beautiful spot some 70 miles north of the Californian border. However, this year we have also been plagued by fog and mist and very little rain this winter. I think the weather systems globally are in a trasnitional phase; to what I do not know. I see that Eureka is 170 miles south-west of Merlin. It looks like a great spot. But I agree fog is better than snow. Grants Pass, our nearest city, has places at reasonable prices. If you want me to do some research on your behalf then drop me an email.

      1. Thank you for your kind offer Paul. I appreciate it.
I will email you if I decide to take a “deep dive” into research of your area.

I love the photos I have seen of your property. I am used to mountains and trees, and your photos look quite a bit like Vermont… Higher mountains I believe.

Would you mind sharing your ZIP Code, so I can browse around your area and learn about the climate where you are?

If you don’t want to do the following, please ignore this… But if you’re willing to share your exact address, you can email it to:
        FlyingLizard99@gmail.com

(Flying Lizard motorsports is my favorite endurance race car team… Think 24 hours of Le Mans, etc.)

      2. I just took a look at raw land around Grants Pass… Quite beautiful… Looks quite a bit like Vermont although I’m sure the vegetation is very different.
You don’t get a lot of snow either, which is extremely important to me.

Having come from woods and mountains, I might prefer that area to being right on the ocean.

House prices look only a tiny bit higher than Vermont after a very quick look.

The problem with housing where I am is simply due to a small population. I am up north almost to the Canadian border (20 miles south) in Franklin County Vermont.

Because of the low population, they’re just are not a lot of houses for sale… Simply because there are not a lot of houses! And when they sell… If the house is decent, they are gone within 10 days. Shortly after Covid ended… The houses were gone in two days!

      3. Paul, property is very slow to sell in this area and I’m sure good deals may be obtained. Hugo is a very friendly place and we love that albeit we do not understand why. Yesterday I went for a bike ride and got my first puncture; I was about three miles from home. I started walking home with the bike and had traveled less than a mile when a stranger stopped and offered me a lift.

  2. If there was a way to attach a photo, I’d include a snap of our old Goose Pond, ME residence on the lake. Across from us was Bald Mountain – and your Mt. Sexton could be its sister.
