Question for Elliot About Public Education

Hello Elliot!

I’d love to engage in a discussion with you — and interested others — about the appropriate role of government in education.

The Federalist Papers made it clear, to me at least, that our founding fathers believed that the government, our federal government in particular, should have nothing to do with educating the populace.

The government providing public education? How did THAT happen?

I realize it sounds a bit radical now, but I believe that any discussion of what is right and wrong about public education today must begin with a healthy debate about whether the federal government should be involved in public education at all.

Your thoughts?  Thanks!

  1. Yes, the federal government should concentrate its activities on going to the other side of the planet and killing natives with robots, while celebrating Allaah. Otherwise it could ask California to send some potholes over, and a few dozens of thousands of prisoners too.

The Federal contribution to elementary and secondary education is a about 10.5 percent, which includes funds not only from the Department of Education (ED) but also from other Federal agencies, such as the Department of Health and Human Services’ Head Start program and the Department of Agriculture’s School Lunch program. So why the big obsession? So that those 10.5% can be used to buy more robots, to kill more pesky natives in far away lands?

The total war department budget is more than 708 billion dollar, without even counting the secret budget of the secret “intelligence” agencies…

Fact is, government is government, governing is part of democracy, people cannot just have a continual party and get drunk on Neolithic ideology.

    1. I thought this Website was supposed to be about integrity, and exchanging ideas and opinions respectfully? Patrice’s comments are either laced with venom or derisive and condescending. I think we should think twice about actually publishing his comments. I fail to see how they advance the dialogue.

      1. I actually am sorry to say that I agree with Professor Jarrell. I see where you are coming from Patrice, but I fail to see how your comments achieve any sort of positive end.
