It’s time to change our habits.

Funny how things evolve!

A week ago I was casually reading a copy of our local newspaper, the Grants Pass Daily Courier, and inside was a piece by Kathleen Parker, a syndicated columnist, entitled It’s the end of everything – or not.

I found it particularly interesting especially a quotation in her piece by Robert Watson, a British chemist who served as the chair of the panel of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). The IPBES had recently published the results of the three-year study by 145 authors from 50 countries.

So I wrote to Kathleen Parker asking if I might have permission to quote that excerpt and, in turn, received her permission to so do.

Here it is:

Robert Watson wrote in a statement that:

“the health of ecosystems on which we and all species depend is deteriorating more rapidly than ever. We are eroding the very foundation of our economies, livelihoods, food security, health and quality of life worldwide.”

But, Watson also said, it’s not too late to repair and sustain nature – if we act now in transformative ways.

It is time to change our habits both at an individual level and the level of countries working together.

Moreover we haven’t got decades. We have got to do it now!

  1. Agreed, Paul. Something has got to give. Between the bees dying off and bats as well with a disease that scientists can’t seem to get a hold of will anything survive? Plus fish may become extinct in the near future because we treat our oceans like trash receptacles, the prognosis isn’t good.

    1. Susan, there is something very strange about homo sapiens. Something very peculiar! The closest I have got to it is the book Denial by Ajit Varki and Danny Brower. Or rather the conclusions in the book. May I suggest you get a copy?

  2. As always, thank you for your passionate advocacy of our Mother Earth. I’m a firm believer in the squeaky wheel gets the grease and goodness knows, we need some ‘grease’ to impress upon people to take their heads out of the sand.

    1. Oh yes!

I sometimes wonder if I should stray from dogs onto other topics. But there are a number of really passionate writers out there: George Monbiot: Tom Englehardt; and others, that I want to swap from dogs and promote their message. Both those two have given me permission to republish their blogs!

Re the grease! Yes, yes, and yes!
