South Devon snow report!

Wanted to share this with you!

First of all the weather forecast from the UK Met Office as at 1pm PST yesterday.

Between 18:05 Thu 1st and 08:00 Fri 2nd

Heavy snow affecting southwest England and parts of Wales is extending further east across parts of southern and central England. The snow will be accompanied by very strong easterly winds leading to blizzards and considerable drifting. From Thursday evening some places could also see ice build up due to freezing rain, mainly across southwest England. Long delays and cancellations of public transport seem very likely. Some roads may become blocked by deep snow, stranding vehicles and passengers. Long interruptions to power supplies and other utilities are likely to occur, along with possible damage to trees and other structures due to heavy snow or ice. This is an update to extend the amber area northeastwards.

Then here’s a photograph taken by Neil Kelly, a good friend from my Devon days, from half-way up Totnes High Street yesterday morning.

And this was before the blizzard arrived. N

Wherever you are in the world, stay warm and dry!

  1. The snow that has fallen in Swansea, Wales, is rather strange. Its like icing-sugar. It was blown around so there is a thin layer on the paths and roads but none of exposed roofs. I think that thicker snow in places like Devon and Cardiff. It’s bitterly cold. I cannot remember it ever being this cold before.

  2. Lovely photo. Could do with some rain and snow here in drier than normal Tasmania.
It’s all the result of a sudden twisting of the northern polar jet stream, in turn resulting from a jump in temperatures high over the Arctic. Temperatures in places up there have reached up to 30 degrees Fahrenheit above average for this time of year.
The shape of things to come?

    1. Dear Margaret, thank you for your response. Yes, at so many levels about the only thing we can count upon in the future is – uncertainty!
Or as I have quoted before in this place: “I can predict anything, except those things involving the future!”

BTW, I don’t think G’s gotten around to skype this week. Crazy times. Probably over the weekend.

  3. Here in Cambridgeshire we haven’t been too badly hit. There’s a lovely carpet of snow outside, but it is bitterly cold (for here… I’m sure it’s peanuts to some places!).

    1. Yes, speaking to friends in England earlier on it seems clear that it has been very patchy. From several feet in Brixham to just a few inches outside Bristol. Still pleased to hear that it hasn’t been too bad for you!
