Because since the beginning of February there have been four (now five as of yesterday!) dog food recalls notified to subscribed owners. On the 9th February this was released:
Smokehouse Pet Products of Sun Valley, CA, is recalling a specific lot of its “Beefy Munchies” dog treats due to potential contamination with Salmonella bacteria.

Then on the same day another notification was issued:
Raws for Paws of Minneapolis, MN, is recalling specific lots of its raw frozen dog food due to possible contamination with Salmonella bacteria.
Once again, a link was offered that provided full information.

A day later, on the 10th February, out came the third alert:
Redbarn Pet Products LLC of Long Beach, CA, is recalling a specific lot of its “Redbarn Naturals Bully Sticks” due to potential contamination with Salmonella bacteria.

The last alert was received on the 12th February.
Darwin’s Natural Pet Products of Tukwila, WA, is recalling specific lots of its Darwin’s ZooLogics raw frozen dog food due to possible contamination with Salmonella bacteria.

J. M. Smucker has announced it is voluntarily withdrawing multiple dog food brands due to the presence of the drug pentobarbital.

This is so terrible, Paul. I shared on Twitter, as usual.
I followed your link and read lots of comments there too, which scared me to see. How can it be allowed to use euthanized animals/pets in food for our pets????? I don’t understand that.
Another good reason to buy quality food, which I also do here. I could wish, that I could buy even better, but I can’t afford more for now. I use lots of money every month at quality food for both my dog and my two old cats, as now also need special food for cats with kidney problems and this is very expensive and don’t offer the quality, as I would prefer. I mix after best thought, because I don’t like mostly of the brands, as are possible to buy.
In Europe, we have a company, maybe several, as make both animal food, but also medication against insects etc. Those I don’t feel, that I can trust. They must choose their way, not both in one company, no matter how good their food are praised. Same company had problems with a customer, which animal died of their medication against insects. It is really a jungle to find good and healthy food for our beloved pets.

The well known brands for renal treatment for the cats here are by met vet only Hills and Royal Canin. I don’t like any of them, but my cats like Hills sometimes.
I found out, that Applaws’ senior food only contain 10% of potassium, which is important and my cats love this, but it is very expensive for two cats.
My dog Odin gets Wolf of Wilderness, where I mix wet and dry food with different tastes and he loves this. I can’t afford to only feed him with the canned food.
There are other brands here about the renal treatment, but because the companies mix their businesses, I don’t trust them.

I forgot to say, that I also fed my cats with usual Applaws before they got kidney problems and a well known dry food to go for all time. This is now become to Hills renal food.

Irene, I was just chatting to Jeannie about your situation. Jean said that it might be less expensive if you were to buy food and cook it for your cats and dogs. Is that an option for you? If so, will detail what Jean cooks.

Good advice Paul. It is amazing to me that pet foods are so prone to contamination… lack of regulation and use of inferior meats and ingredients I suspect.

One would think, or hope, that the owners and managers of companies producing pet food would practice self-regulation! But I guess I am just displaying my naivety!
