Thanks for the link to the Earth and Solar System blog. However, I think it is a little unfair to say the mainstream media has “moved on”. This week the BBC may well be focused on terrestrial and domestic politics but, the BBC did report this story last week (on 28 August); including an explanation of esoteric terms like ‘unconformity’ and the geochemistry of different rock types.

However, I feel the BBC failed to take the opportunity to use one of my favourite words (and one of the longest I know): Because, in place of a lengthy phrase such as ‘the environmental conditions on Mars in the early history of the Solar system’, I think it would be much simpler to use the word in question (which I would love to see on a Scrabble board), which is… ‘palaeoenvironmental’. ;-)
